The Wesley's Guild
About Us:
The Wesley Guild was initially established by the Methodist Church over 100 years ago. Its membership has now embraced a wide age group drawn from many denominations.
Today, the Wesley Guild is a mid-week fellowship for men and women of all ages, meeting at weekly, fortnightly or monthly intervals with a programme of diverse interests, devotional, cultural, Christian service and social.
Motto:
The Guild motto reminds us that the faith we have in our hearts must be translated into action in our lives. How hard we sometimes find that, as did St Paul. In his letter to the Romans, he describes the struggle between his good intentions and his failure to live up to them. He asked: 'Who will deliver me?' His answer: 'Jesus Christ'. How? If we accept him into our lives, he will equip us to truly be of one heart and one way. The Guild motto encapsulates what the Lord does for those who accept the Gospel.
I will bring them back and make then dwell in safety. I will give them one heart and one way (RSV: Jer 32 v 38)
The NIV translates that last sentence in this way:
I will give them singleness of heart and action.
Objectives:
The Wesley Guild is part of the social and caring life of the Church:
- to promote open and honest discussion of the meaning of the Christian faith in today’s world;
- to broaden the cultural horizons of its members for the enrichment of life;
- to be a caring fellowship for its members;
- to be a point of contact with Christianity for people to develop their own patterns of devotion to Christ
- to encourage an interest in the local community;
- to support care projects locally, nationally and overseas.
