A Brief History of Trinity at Bowes

{title}The Methodist church in Palmers Green began life in 1901 in a hired building in Russell Road. The land on which the present building stands in Bowes Road was purchased a few years before this. It was not until 1907 that sufficient funds were available to build the church on the site.

A rapidly growing congregation led to large development of the rest of the site in 1925. This was partly to accommodate a Sunday School with 700 children and the social activities of the church. By the 1960s serious defects in the church building, seating 900 people, were apparent. Faced with a declining membership a momentous decision was made to replace the whole worship place with a new building. The Methodist Church, Trinity Wood Green closed its doors to join forces with the church in Bowes Road; which then became Trinity at Bowes. Two years later the congregation of New Southgate Methodist Church joined with Trinity at Bowes.

In 2001, a Lenten group took an in depth study of the whole area within one mile of the building. It became clear that the church was now in an area of deprivation. There were evident needs for expanding community facilities to include a nursery, facilities for young people and to help others to establish their own programmes. The existing premises were in drastic need of modernisation.

The vision for the future led to another landmark decision to move forward on a £2M community project. So far the church has completed much of this but there is still more to do.

Mission Statement Expansion

The church places worship at the centre of its life. It seeks to make worship a creative and heart warming experience. The desire is to welcome seekers and to help people to become disciples of Jesus Christ. The church is called to develop its pastoral care for all within its family.

The church is committed to make its premises open every day of the week for community activities. In so doing, it works towards creating a safe and friendly environment and providing an attractive space with above average facilities. It intends to expand the usage of these facilities and to provide good oversight of all its provision.

The church has, therefore, defined its role within the community and this major aspect of its life is known as TaB Centre Plus. We are aware of the huge financial commitment that this involves and actively raise funds and apply for community grants.
